The Presidential Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition recommends that children and adolescents engage in a minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity. In addition, numerous case studies say that youth that participate in sports perform better in school, have better self esteem and have better health habits as an adult. Part of the problem in today’s world is that youth are becoming more and more stagnant.
The Nielson company reports that children spend an average of 55 hours a week texting, watching tv and playing video games. At Boulder Active, we want to get children off the couch and onto the field, court, rink or gym where kids can begin to develop lifelong passions that will positively affect the rest of their lives. When it comes to youth sports, there are misconceived notions that we at Boulder Active want to dismiss.First, is that youth sports have to be expensive. This is completely untrue. It is true that some specialty camps can be quite expensive but there are several great opportunities for youth physical that are very inexpensive and even sometimes free. Second, youth sports should be competitive. Many physical activities such as dance, rock climbing and golf are more cooperative than competitive. The last misconceived notion is the only activities available and fun to youth are classic team sports such as basketball and football. Boulder County has so many activities youth can engage in. In addition to all the recreation that go along with living in the shadow of the Rocky mountains, there are also numerous choices in dance, martial arts, tennis, rock climbing and bicycling.
